Embracing typography in advertising and design

The human brain & optical illusions

I am fascinated by the way the human brain is fooled by optical illusions, and that is why this week I chose to feature an artist with a similar fascination, Lex Wilson.

Lex Wilson is an artist specializing in 3d typography, often using the type to create optical illusions. Along with illusions he often plays with the dual meanings of words that are common in the English language, creating sculptures based on the ideas. He often uses a collection of forced perspectives, brain-eye tricks, and rendering of light and models of 3d objects to create engaging artwork that often needs a few seconds to fully comprehend.

Forced perspective

Below is an example of his forced perspective to create a statue that reads both real and fake depending on the vantage point.

Nike commission

Lex Wilson has also been commissioned to create artwork for two Nike pieces. The goal was to create a piece that communicated the idea to athletes that in the summer season they do not necessarily have to work out at the gym- they can also do it outside in their city. The two concepts featured the Nike tagline “Just Do It” and the Nike swoosh composed of buildings within a city that represented a large obstacle or training course.
